CONDUCTOR
Gábor Horváth
A concert serie of the MAV Symphony Orchestra for elementary school students.
Benjamin Britten wrote this piece in 1942, during the Second World War. It was completed, premiered and became so successful that it has been frequently performed ever since, under the title Variations on a Theme of Henry Purcell. The Rondeau Britten chose the Rondeau is from the incidental music Henry Purcell (1659-1695) composed to a play. This concert is the first time we will hear this rondeau in its original form, performed by string instruments. The title of Britten's orchestral work is Variations, meaning versions. First, we introduce the theme of the rondeau, then it will be repeated by the orchestra's large instrumental groups. Afterwards, each instrument is given its own variation, even the harp, and the whole orchestra plays it again together as a summary. The names of the instruments will be told by a host (in this case, our conductor himself takes on this role). The music becomes more and more complex, and at the very end, the original theme is played slowly and solemnly once more.
About the concert series: the MAV Symphony Orchestra relaunched its youth series entitled “Concerts for Grandchildren and Grandparents” , which has been a success ever since. the fundamental idea of the series is to share with children the musical experience given by the beautiful sound of the symphony orchestra, and to broaden their knowledge by familiarizing them with the masterpieces of classical music. The program is tailored to the receptivity of children, and is led by a professional presenter, in order to further facilitate their understanding of the music they hear.
