The Parafónia Orchestra was founded in 1995 for providing a place for therapeutic activity for disabled children. The strong, positive effect of music on the mental development of children is widely known. Music is particularly effective in mentally disabled children, who may be more successful during their school-years and even in their adult life. What is more, they will experience the joy of music whenever singing or playing instruments together.
The multitude of percussion instruments developed by the famous German composer, Carl Orff, and the color scheme for sheet music devised by Heinrich Ullrich greatly helped in developing this new method. The name of the ensemble adopted in 2003 is derived from the Latin words para (somewhat different) and fonia (sounding). The orchestra may proud itself with numerous appearances in radio and television, at the Academy of Music and the Palace of the Arts, and several countries. The head and manager of the orchestra is Réka Fabényi, music teacher.
