About the show

Even within the realm of universal art, it is exceedingly rare to encounter a sequence of works belonging to the same genre in which each piece possesses its own distinct individuality, differs entirely from the others, and yet is bound together by some inexpressible force that unites them into a single great whole. William Shakespeare’s sonnets, Michelangelo’s figures on the ceiling frescoes of the Sistine Chapel, and Miklós Radnóti’s eclogues come to mind when we attempt to compare anything to Ludwig van Beethoven’s nine symphonies.

The first was composed in 1800, the ninth completed in 1824. We know well the events of the composer’s life during this period: his struggle with advancing deafness, his loneliness, and his longing for love. Perhaps this explains why performers sometimes feel an irresistible urge to present all nine symphonies in a single overarching cycle.

Inspired by this vision, Gábor Takács-Nagy undertakes the remarkable challenge of performing all of Beethoven’s symphonies within a relatively short period of time. Having recorded the complete cycle several years earlier and developed an exceptionally deep spiritual connection with these works, he now brings them to life once again in concert performance.

It promises to be a breathtaking experience both for the musicians on stage and for the audience receiving these masterpieces.
