Ever since the tragic love story first appeared in a poem by a 16th-century English poet and later achieved worldwide fame through William Shakespeare’s drama, the tale of Romeo and Juliet has captivated not only writers, film directors, and ballet artists, but composers as well. Vincenzo Bellini composed a two-act opera, while Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky created a mesmerizing fantasy overture inspired by the story of the lovers of Verona.
At the concert, Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, filled with longing and nostalgia, will be performed by Croatian virtuoso Martina Filjak. The MÁV Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by renowned Italian maestro Antonello Allemandi, and fittingly, the concert will conclude with Tchaikovsky’s Capriccio Italien.
