Italian joie de vivre and classical proportions define this program featuring works by Rossini, Haydn, and Mendelssohn. It is impossible not to hum along with the orchestra during the overture to The Barber of Seville — this witty, spirited music is one of the best-known pieces in the classical repertoire. Haydn’s Cello Concerto in D major is elegant and clearly structured, at times intimate in character, yet far more virtuosic and technically demanding than one might first expect. After the intermission, Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony will be performed, radiating sunshine and freshness, and offering the musical equivalent of a splendid travelogue. The evening will be conducted by the talented young maestro Davide Trolton, winner of the 2024 Erich Bergel International Conducting Competition and recipient of the 2023 Premio delle Arti award.
