The members of the MÁV Symphony Orchestra’s cello section have been performing chamber music together for several years under the leadership of Richárd Rózsa. A number of composers have written works for cello ensemble, including David Popper, the Prague-born virtuoso who was invited by Franz Liszt to become the first professor of cello at the newly founded Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest.
Today, the 12 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic enjoy international acclaim for their imaginative and entertaining programmes, featuring a remarkably diverse and often humorous repertoire. For the MÁV Symphony Orchestra Cello Ensemble, the arrangements are created by Gábor Werner, a member of the orchestra who has also pursued studies in composition and conducting.
This concert presents arrangements of works by Bartók, Kodály, Shostakovich, Fauré, Brahms, Debussy, and Piazzolla, originally composed for piano, voice, or orchestra.
The ensemble is joined by Ágnes Herczku, the Liszt Prize-winning Hungarian folk singer, whose distinguished career includes countless recordings and acclaimed performances.
