Two eras, two entirely different states of mind — even though only a few years separate these two French compositions. In Darius Milhaud’s lighthearted and witty Trio, written in 1936, we hear the vibrant energy of Parisian life brought vividly to life.
By contrast, Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time was composed in 1941 during World War II while the composer was held in a prisoner-of-war camp. Written for an unusual instrumental ensemble, the work conveys a deeply spiritual message about time, eternity, and faith. Its haunting masterpiece of the 20th century is characterized by bird-song-like melodies, stormy and extreme contrasts, and moments of profound meditation.
The concert will feature the virtuoso musicians of the MÁV Symphony Orchestra.
