On 11 April 1905, 121 years ago, one of Hungary’s greatest poets, Attila József, was born. In his honour, Hungary celebrates the Day of Hungarian Poetry every year on this date.
Many people consider spring the most beautiful season of the year, as nature awakens from its winter sleep and fills the world with new life and joy. This spirit of renewal is beautifully captured in Antonio Vivaldi’s violin concerto Spring from The Four Seasons.
The journey from darkness to light has inspired countless composers. One of the finest examples is Edvard Grieg’s Morning Mood, while Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Dance of the Little Swans from Swan Lake depicts another enchanting aspect of the natural world. In stage productions of the ballet, this dance is traditionally performed by young children.
Leopold Mozart composed his Toy Symphony especially for young musicians. Alongside the instruments of the orchestra, the work features a delightful variety of toy instruments.
The fresh air of spring is brought into the concert hall by Antonio Vivaldi’s flute concerto The Goldfinch and the charming miniature The Cuckoo by the French composer Jean-Philippe Rameau. No spring concert would be complete without Johann Strauss II, whose beautiful waltz Voices of Spring brings the sounds and spirit of the season vividly to life.
