The MÁV Symphony Orchestra invites audiences to an unforgettable evening of musical inspiration on 26 June 2026 at 7:00 p.m. in the magnificent Ceremonial Hall of the Italian Cultural Institute. From the passionate lyricism of the Romantic era and dazzling virtuosity to one of the greatest symphonic poems ever written, this concert promises an exceptional musical experience.
The Orchestra will be conducted by Barnabás Kelemen, who will also appear as violin soloist alongside an outstanding international cast: Gloria Campaner (piano), Dóra Kokas (cello), and Maxim Rysanov (viola). The programme brings together two contrasting musical worlds: the youthful brilliance of Felix Mendelssohn and the profound wit and wisdom of Richard Strauss's orchestral masterpiece Don Quixote.
The first half of the evening features Mendelssohn's Concerto for Violin, Piano and Strings in D minor, composed when the composer was only fourteen years old. Already displaying extraordinary artistic maturity, the work combines sparkling virtuosity, lyrical beauty, and an exhilarating finale, confirming Mendelssohn's place among music history's greatest child prodigies. The concerto will be performed by two internationally acclaimed artists, pianist Gloria Campaner and violinist Barnabás Kelemen, both of whom have appeared in many of the world's leading concert halls.
The second half of the concert is devoted to Richard Strauss's monumental symphonic poem Don Quixote. Inspired by Cervantes's immortal novel, the composer transforms its unforgettable characters and adventures into vivid orchestral storytelling. The solo cello embodies the noble yet tragic figure of Don Quixote, while the solo viola portrays his loyal companion, Sancho Panza. Richly cinematic in scope, the work leads listeners through the famous episodes of the novel—from the legendary battle with the windmills to moments of touching humanity. The solo roles will be performed by acclaimed cellist Dóra Kokas and world-renowned violist Maxim Rysanov.
The concert will be conducted by Barnabás Kelemen, one of Hungary's most distinguished musicians, celebrated internationally both as a violin virtuoso and as a conductor.
